{the fairy tale beginning}

Once upon a time there was a quiet princess, the adopted daughter of the Most High King. Now the princess was of courting age and although she had many suitors available none seemed suitable.

The first man she courted was indeed a prince, but his heart was full of deceit and darkness. Once betrothed, the dark prince started treating the princess cruelly, intent on shaming her. The Most High King sent an army to rescue the princess from the dark prince and bring her back home.

Once she returned home the princess’s heart was wounded and torn. Suitors began presenting themselves again, but she found she couldn’t face them and instead spent her time quietly in the stables. Before long she found herself opening up to the stable boy, a young man who had always been part of her life in the kingdom. He was gracious and kind and had always loved the princess even though everyone knew a stable boy was not a suitable match for a princess. The princess began talking to her father about the stable boy, asking if there was a way for them to be together. The Most High King loved his daughter deeply and wanted to give her what she desired, so he summoned the stable boy to the throne room.

The Most High King and the stable boy talked for a long time. Finally, the Most High King offered to adopt the stable boy so that he could be a prince suitable to marry his daughter, the princess. But the stable boy was uncomfortable with the idea of becoming a prince. He wanted instead for the princess to deny her birthright as princess in order for them to be suitable for marriage.

The Most High King became worried. He could see by this time that his daughter already loved the stable boy greatly and that the idea of denying her birthright was not all together unappealing to her. The father’s heart of the Most High King was breaking. He wanted for his daughter, the princess, to be happy. He knew that if she denied her birthright he would not be able to have the same relationship with her that he had now. He knew that she would always question her place in the kingdom, no longer a princess but still not just the wife of a stable boy. He knew that she would eventually have children that he would not be able to have a meaningful relationship with and that they too would always question their place in the kingdom.

And so, with a gentle yet determined father’s heart, the Most High King took it upon himself to find a loving, devoted prince for his daughter, the princess…
